Mixed media, fiber artist
Ukrainian-American artist Talia Johns has been creating art for as long as she can remember. She studied textile design at the Lviv Art Academy, Ukraine and graphic design at Denver Art Institute.
Talia’s artistic career began with graphic design and advertising and continued through photography and visual art, which now informs her current artistic practice.
Talia uses a variety of mediums and doesn’t like to be limited to just one; instead, she tries to concentrate on the message and a story, and have a project serve as inspiration. Her art is environmental in nature and is driven by sustainability and recycling.
Currently Talia’s focus is on the mixed-media paper-cut pieces that incorporate weaving, drawing, and paper collage.
Northern Shore Fractals is a series of fiber art influenced by fractal geometry. I’m trying to harness the chaos of repeating patterns using a visual map to complete the project. The theme is “growing” an Earthly and celestial garden or a reflection of it in each other.
This project uses all repurposed and recycled materials: used dryer sheets, felt 100% recycled from plastic bottles, donated fabric and thread, etc. Small triangular fiber pieces are hand-sewn to create very light fiber sculptures that range from bigger hanging pieces to small jewelry.
Rebirth series of cardboard paper sculptures and 2D that represent Rebirth, Renewal and Impermanence of life and my way of dealing with the mental challenges of war and violence. Based on the Ukrainian symbol of Pysanka (Easter egg). Most of the sculpture has a ragged wood look with the bright pop of color of recycled magazine pages design emerging through in some places. All paper is recycled from cardboard boxes and old magazine pages.

3 dimensional fiber art mask made using embroidery floss and other string fiber. The fiber is covering every inch of the surface of the custom built paper mask sculpture.
Made from the damaged library books and some color paper, this collection of recycled book paper jewelry professes the love for the written word and hope of it to live on into another life.
Each little piece for the jewelry cut, coiled and molded by hand and varnished to protect from moisture.
