January 2024 Artist of the Month
Having lived most of my life on the east coast, the vistas of my new home in Centennial, CO have inspired me to pick up a paint brush to capture the beauty, calm and feel of the area.
Everywhere I turn there are vast images of majestic mountains, wildlife, snow scenes, old structures just waiting to be painted, or simple events from life. I enjoy reliving these delights by painting them to share with others.
To capture what is seen she carries her camera and records these images for later reference. Combining portions of different reference pictures has served to create a new and exciting image to be painted. She has recently begun the challenging process of plein air painting.
When starting a new painting, she begins by creating small thumb nail sketches to develop the light and dark patterns that will carry the viewer’s eye over the painting. Then lightly sketching the image on watercolor paper, testing the colors on a scrap piece of watercolor paper until it will match the mood of the painting. Once satisfied, work begins with the background, usually the sky, and the light foreground. The darker colors are added, finishing with the very dark areas, keeping in mind the patterns they create. She is very fortunate to have a twin sister and daughter who also paint. They are very helpful in critiquing her work. Recently the Friday critique group at the Depot Gallery has been very helpful as well.
When she sees a view that moves her by the subject, composition, or coloring, she is excited to begin painting and wants to share it with others.
